Change means opportunity, but many of us fear it. We don’t feel ready to make the choices that put ourselves in charge of our own working lives

Choosing to change means deciding for ourselves what we are passionate about and where we want to invest our energy.

Many of us aren’t sure where we fit within the New Economy, and so don’t know where we’re going, or often even where to start. We take programs and training, but finish them – or drop out – no further ahead in knowing what we really want to do with our lives.

The Local Employability Access Program provides that answer, in the form of a supportive program that allows you to exercise your imagination and discover what really motivates you.

The LEAP program gets at the heart of what you need to understand about yourself and your approach to your working life. It also gives you the opportunity to develop specific employability skills, and to receive follow-through coaching to help you achieve your goals after the program.

What can taking the LEAP do for you?

  • Add focus and direction to your life
  • Increase your employability, including opportunities for self-employment
  • Use an entrepreneurial approach to create purposeful work in any situation
  • Improve your employment satisfaction to the benefit of yourself, your family, and your community

You can create meaningful, satisfying, rewarding work for yourself by:

  • Defining a personal vision for life success;
  • Following a learning plan to gain the skills you need to realize your vision;
  • Building a support network of friends, community, and local services;
  • Improving your opportunities in the changing economy;
  • Achieving your goals on your own terms!

Here’s how it works:

  1. You determine your true goals through self-exploration, personal development workshops, and coaching.
  2. You develop a Personal Learning Plan as a result of these activities.
  3. You choose the LEAP learning material suited to your goals and learning plan.
  4. You continue to receive coaching support after the formal program ends.
  5. You follow-through on your plans by creating an enterprise, continuing your training, or getting involved in your community.

The learning material is organized into five modules:

  1. Personal Development
  2. Enterprise Skills Development
  3. Learning for Employability
  4. Using Information Technology
  5. Introduction to Community Development

Each module has an Advisor you can contact for assistance on the topics. You'll also have a local facilitator to help you choose the learning materials that are right for you and schedule communications with your coach.

LEAP developing Entrepreneurship "Boot Camps" for Canadians over 50

With the slow recovery from economic recession, unemployment rates for middle-aged Canadians are at an all time high. Thousands of workers in the 50+ age group have been laid off, many from long-time jobs. The pension crisis has made early retirement impossible for many. A substantial number of older unemployed workers are now unable to find work and are left with little means for making a living. Entrepreneurship and self-employment is an increasingly viable alternative and second career option.

In response, the LEAP team is developing an intensive Entrepreneurship Boot Camp that allows older Canadians to come in with an idea and leave with a plan for kick starting their business ideas.
